THE ALNWICK GARDEN WALK - SUNDAY 13 MAY 2007

Best foot forward for autism research in the North-East

30 May 2007

Lynn Hart, Hilary Gilfoy, Dame Stephanie Shirley and Eileen HopkinsAutism Speaks, the UK's only charity solely funding research into the causes of autism, moved into The Alnwick Garden in Northumberland for a day's Walk for Autism Research in May.

The event, which raised nearly £17,000 from 600+ walkers, was the charity's first venture in the North-East following previous walks elsewhere in the UK which mobilise families affected by autism, organisations and service-suppliers to have a fun day out in a good cause.

Says Lynn Hart, Head of Events and Community Fundraising for Autism Speaks, "The far North-East isn't the most obvious place for a national charity (based in Oxfordshire) to raise its profile, but we seem to have struck a chord with both the autism community and those serving it and we were thrilled by the welcome we received."
